Subtitle Extractor App Reviews
Doesn’t work
Bought the app, tried with many video formats including the most common mp4 - doesn’t work at all. Please refund the money.
This does a pretty good job of using OCR to convert SUP subtitles. Not perfect, but none of them are and it’s definitely better than the only other Mac-native alternative that I’ve used in some ways. I do wish it would show the results against the original subtitles to make it easier to fix errors, but I get by. I’d also very much prefer to load subtitle files by right-clicking, or at least dragging-dropping the file into the app’s window.
DO NOT BUY!
This app does not work with hardsubbed subtitles. Can not extract. Please refund my money asap.
Doesn’t work
Doesn’t work, No subitle found and extracted.
Best of The Best
Outstanding work, this app extract subtitles perfect, and extract correct in foreign languages. So perfect. Very Good Job.
A Very Useful Tool to Extract Image-Based Subtitle!
I have been using Subtitle Extractor from v3.3 to the latest version. It always improved a lot and added more feauture on it. Great job!
The description for this app says “Supports basically any video file that contains subtitles”, but it doesn’t support .ts files. The description should be more explicit as to what is and is not supported.
Doesn’t support SUP files
SUP is a common rip format for image-based subtitles.
Doesn’t work with most files.
I got it to work a couple times. But haven’t been able to get it to work again. Wish I had my money back.
Hi, Just purchased/downloaded this app last night. My files types are mkv and the software worked flawlessly to extract the subtitle files and leave them as srt files in separate folders. I suggest having each mkv file in a separate folder and then opening this application, clicking the green add button, searching for the mkv video file in the folder you created, adding to the software engine, and processing the extraction. You will then find the extracted srt file in an auto-generated folder within the original mkv folder you created. I have not tried this software with other video types, just with mkv.
Gets the job done.
I came across this program looking around for something to replace an older software that was not working completely anymore. I wanted something to extract foreign languages as well. Even though it has not been updated in a while, I decided to give it a shot. It is simple but gets the job done. I like the fact that it shows all the subtitles so I can select just the ones I want, hit extract, and it does them all at once. It does not take as long as the other software I was using, which is nice. From what I have done so far, it seems to be pretty accurate too, not perfect but close. It works with .MKV files, which is a plus. I could only give 3 stars because of a couple of things. 1. When extracting the subtitles, I wish it would remember the folder that was last used. When doing my TV shows, it gets tedious selecting the folder each time. Also, a big thing is that if the folder already exists (Extracted Subtitles), do not overwrite the folder, just save into it. With tv shows, I have to rename the folders for each episode. Files get named based on the video file name, so there should be no problem to save them together. Maybe just be able to set a default folder to save all to. 2. I have a couple of Asian movies that would like to save the subtitles in their language as well for fun and to see, but on some discs, they all list as English and do not get extracted correctly. If there was a way for me to change the language of a stream before extracting them, that would be perfect. Other than those, I like the program and hope it can get updated.
Can't OCR hardsubs
I guess I didn't understand the product description. OCR on hardsubs would be useful. What the program can actually do is extract subs that are already a separate file, which I already have other options for, so it's not particularly useful.
Just perfect!
If extracting subs from a MKV file as a SRT file is what you need you won't find a better piece of software to do it with on a Mac.
Still working Great
Runnin gon Mac OS Ventura 13.6.5 and only ever came acros one video I couldnt extract subtitles from (it froze up the app). Hopefully this app continues to get updates into the future.
Has problems with Japanese subtitles
The OCR process does not work very well with Japanese it seems. Perhaps an update to a later OCR library is in order.
No Batch Functionality
This tool used to be able to batch process files. For whatever reason this was removed, and now it's functionality is extremely limited.
simple, fast
Aaahhhhhhhh1
Works, But Combersome.
Load MP4, Extract... Choose Extraction "Folder" not "File" (Will Be Overwritten - Entire Contents - with Subsequent Subtitles). Progress Indicator Is Fine, But Wait... Need A Gratuitous Pop-Up (OK) Button with ADD. Yes, Even Pimping Your Own Warez Is Still An ADD.
Doesn't work on Monterey
"App is damaged", repeated downloads and installs didn't solve the problem. Never got around to actually trying to do anything with subtitles. Expecting a refund.
Does not work.
I have an .mp4 video with subtitles. It does not extract them.
I am raising my review from 3 to 5 stars
I have had subsequent emails from him, and a satisfied he will be releassing a new version with most of my concerns repairs, soon. Raising the review since I was a bit hasty. He had not replied, but turns out he was very busy. I must appologize for that. ----- I spoke to him a few times. We discovered that his app was failing because of character sets in some subtitles that his app did not understand. So it would basically crash. He knows what is happening, yet he has not updated it to at least ignore those items and continue on. In addition I sent him a request for a useful enhancement. Wanted to be able to batch a folder of movies. Being a fellow developer, I even suggested how to do this. But he did not respond. For many of us who need to extract more than 3 or 4 films worth of subtitles, this is sorta a must have. Other wise it is a mess. It is a fine tool but if you need to extract subtitles and it keeps crashing, you should use the MKVToolNix and uncheck the offending foreign subtitles and recreated the MKV. This will allow you to extract and least english, spanish, french from most any mkv file without it crashing. A work around at least.
Almost perfect
I have been searching for a way to extract subtitles for a while. I admit, I was focusing on free ways, but based on its performance so far, this app is worth spending $10. It is as simple as boasted, and it does work on mkvs from both DVDs and Blu-rays. I would estimate it's about 95% to 98% accurate so far, so it's as good as I realistically hoped, and actually better than I expected, so I figured I'd given it the full five, since I can't give it a 4.5. I am very pleased.
Fills a void, but it´s not perfect
Well, we´ve got very few options. This app does some of the heavy lifting, but the resulting subtitles require heavy proofreading. Other apps I have used try words against dictionaries (a language might be chosen at the start). If a proper word cannot be found, even a preview of the graphics can be shown as to type the proper conversion and make the app learn it. Too many non-existing words show up.
Converts Bitmap Subtitles into SRT
Iconverted by DVDs to MKV files and wanted to convert the Bitmap-based subtitles to SRT subtitles because some video players for smart TVs or for Synology Video Station do not support bitmap subtitles. The product provides the desire capability of using OCR to convert bitmap subtitles into SRT subtitles. The quality of the conversion is very high. The only example in which I needed to edit the result slightly was for the movie Rashamon for which the English subtitle was not easy to read. The tool allows me to select one or multiple subtitles to convert. I have a larger library and would greatly benefit from a capability to script or run batch conversions. I add a star if this is provided.
Worked for me
I needed to extract some .srt subtitles from an .mkv file, and this app successfully got me the file I needed. It seems like all the other subtitle managing apps are meant only for adding subtitles to videos, not extracting existing subtitles, so I'm glad I finally found something that did what I needed.
After the Update
I have to chnge my review from 5 stars to 3. Simply because it relly depends on the video you are trying to get the close captions from. It is really a hit or miss. A bit annoying nd hope they can fix this issue soon. I am hard of hearing and need the close captions!
Horrible update
You can only process ONE file at a time. Please bring back batch processing.
Makes too many OCR errors
It tries to do what it says it's going to, but it does a very poor job with OCR. If the source subtitles are images, which is common, the resulting .srt file will be sufficiently riddled wiith errors you probably won't be happy with it. For example, in my first attempted application, in just the first few lines of dialog: 1) It appended a non-printing character to the end of a lot of lines. That seems more like a straight-up bug than an OCR failure, but it's hard to say. 2) It recognized "Technically" as "Technical/y". (The second "l" is recognized as a forward slash.) 3) It recognized "I'm" as "I 'm". (There's a bogus space between "I" and the apostrophe.) 4) It recognized "with" as "With". (Bad case on the "w".) 5) It recognized "won't" as "won 't". (Bogus space.) A fairly simple language model would have fixed all these, but the program clearly just shoves it through a mediocre OCR engine and does zero cleanup.
Love the App
Would be nice if I could select which subtitles to extract instead of having to extracting them all.
It works!
People seem to be giving this guy a hard time. He’s pretty clear about the types of video files and the types of subtitles he can extract from those video files. So I put it to the test and it worked perfectly! MKV and M4V worked perfectly. Worked on SUP, PGS, and SRT. The ones who gave specs about what didn’t work listed weird types of subtitles and video files. Others seem to want the program to extract subtitles from their raw video data. It worked. Stick to the subtitle types listed above, stick to the video types listed above, and you should be fine. Five stars. Nice job!
Buyer Beware
This does not work with drm free EIA-608 (Final Cut) subtitles.
No Major Issues
Seems to work fine on mkv files, so a good pairing with makemkv and handbrake….
